Reflections

During my nearly 18 years as a mother there have been many times, when one of the children was curled around me, light moving gently across their skin, that I have wished there was somebody there to capture that moment between us. Being a photographer that can do this for others has become something of an obsession. Life contains so many tiny triumphs, and I love being someone who can hold a mirror up to the achievement, and create a picture of a moment of everyday perfection. At the moment I am four weeks into a workshop with Colie James, a photographer I have long-admired for telling people’s stories in images full of vibrant life. This week, as part of the workshop, I photographed a friend’s family in their home. This mother, like me, is usually the one behind the lens. We decided to do a session that was led by the children and involved no direction or posing. I am so happy to have caught these beautiful, spontaneous interactions between a mother and her children, and the children being very much their glorious selves.
